I tend to observe what other people are doing. In my other life as a librarian, I went to a conference in Washington, DC. One morning, I came down to the lobby in my hotel before embarking on my days events. I saw this well-dressed gentleman sitting calmly in a wing-back chair reading the newspaper. He did not appear to be in a rush, but he was definitely prepared for his day.
I imagined that he was financially well off, based on his manner of dress and the hotel he chose to stay in. He looked like the kind of man that was ready, willing, and able to use his money to influence decision makers. Whether any of it was true, I will never know. I was captivated by the idea that he could be using money to buy influence, but to what end?
