Morals of the story: make sure that every party guest gets a plate and timing is everything. The princess’s father was one plate short for the wise women, so the snubbed old lady cursed the princess to die after pricking her finger on a spindle at age 15.  One of the other wise women was able to change her fate to 100 years of slumber instead of death.  During that century, many adventurous men died in the thorns trying to get to the castle.  A prince happened try his luck on the day the curse was set to expire, and he married the princess. In the linocut, the princess drapes over the land, as her curse covered the castle and court.
