Sofa Art – Open Edition Linocut

Five Variations of the linocut print "Sofa Art" by Leslie Deil

When I was in college working on my art degree, the ultimate insult was “it’s sofa art.” This meant your piece was visually appealing but void of meaning. I was also told never to use text in a piece, “it’s lazy.”

As an artist, I am disappointed by the proliferation of nice looking pictures in homes and offices that look good enough in the space, but have no connection to the people that live or work there. Rather than frame a piece of original artwork or a personal photograph, people just purchase something from a big box store because it looks like it belongs in the space.

Don’t get me wrong, if you love a picture of a Highland Cattle steer with his hair blowing in the wind, go for it. I just challenge you to find something more unique and personal rather than a mass produced image. If you want your art to match the sofa, there is a piece out there you will love created by an artist.
